- PHENYLALANINE :
dl-Phenylalanine is a combination of the
well-tolerated essential amino acids, d-phenylalanine and l-phenylalanine.
Together, these compounds promote mental functioning, support a positive
outlook, and relax the musculoskeletal system. l-phenylalanine is a
precursor to tyrosine, which converts to the neurotransmitters Norepinephrine,
Epinephrine, Dopamine and Tyramine. Tyrosine and its metabolites have
been shown to support emotional well-being, memory and learning. d-Phenylalanine
may regulate the levels of certain endorphins, thereby calming stressed
muscles and joints.
By maintaining healthy tyrosine and endorphin
levels dl-Phenylalanine nutritionally supports mental acuity and emotional
well-being, while relaxing stressed muscles and joints.
Phenylalanine (along with tyrosine) is
a precursor of the excitatory neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine
and the natural appetite suppressing hormone CCK. Therefore, it may
be helpful when dieting.
L-phenylalanine
L-phenylalanine is useful for depression.
L-phenylalanine may aggravate hypertension.
If you have high blood pressure, consider using DLPA and start with
100 mg/day and increase the amounts over several weeks while monitoring
blood pressure.
D-phenylalanine
D-phenylalanine may prevent breakdown of the brains natural narcotics
and may thus help with chronic pain. The liver is able to convert d-phenylalanine
to the l-phenylalanine, the metabolically active form.
D-phenylalanine has occasionally caused
mild side effects such as nausea, heartburn, or transient headaches
in smaller amounts.
Nerve damage has not been reported with
1,500 mg per day or less of D-phenylalanine.
DL-phenylalanine (DLPA)
DL-phenylalanine is a mixture of both forms of the amino acid. It is
less likely to raise blood pressure. It may be helpful as an additional
therapy for depression or reduced energy. Consider using 1,000-1,5000
mg DLPA on an empty stomach on first rising in the morning. Adding 100
mg of vitamin B6 and 500 mg of vitamin C is helpful.
If you don't get the desired results with
DLPA, change to, or add, tyrosine.
Pain relief
DL-phenylalanine helps reduce chronic pain.

Typical manufactures warning for phenylalanine
and/or tyrosine:
Use only as directed. Not for use by children, pregnant or lactating
women or by persons with the genetic disorder of phenylketonuria (PKU),
psychosis, hypertension, pigmented malignant melanoma, cancer, violent
temper or persons taking prescription MAO (monoamine oxidase) inhibitor
drugs. Excessive consumption of phenylalanine and/or tyrosine may cause
symptoms of excessive stimulation: tremors, rapid heartbeat, irritability
or insomnia. In cases of excessive stimulation or insomnia: reduce consumption
by half, and avoid intake during late afternoon or evening hours.
