what is Coenzyme Q10?
Coenzyme Q10 (also known as Q10) is a vitamin-like substance, and which has a major role in the energy metabolism of the cells. This compound contributes actively to the conversion of fat, carbohydrates, protein and alcohol in ATP (adenosine triphosphate), a molecule that stores energy in its chemical form. When a cell needs energy, it breaks down the ATP molecule and releases energy that is stored inside. This whole process takes place in the interior of cells, in a series of Jewish-shaped structures called mitochondria. Above all the muscle cells depend on large quantities of energy, reason why muscle cells contain many more mitochondria than other types of cells. Cardiac muscle is a good example of body tissue with cells that contain a large amount of mitochondria and which has proportionally more important energy needs.
